General Recovery Guidelines
Rest & Activity
- Rest for the first 24–48 hours after surgery.
- Gentle walking is encouraged to improve circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.
- Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, cycling, or gym activities until cleared by your surgeon.
- Gradually return to normal daily activities as tolerated.
Driving
- Do not drive for at least 24 hours after anesthesia or while taking strong pain medication.
- Resume driving only when you can move comfortably and react safely.
Diet & Hydration
- Drink plenty of water unless otherwise advised.
- Start with light meals and gradually return to your normal diet.
- High-fiber foods may help reduce constipation caused by pain medication.
Pain Management
- Mild discomfort, burning with urination, or fatigue is common after many urological procedures.
- Take prescribed medications exactly as directed.
- Avoid taking additional medications unless approved by your doctor.
Wound & Catheter Care
Surgical Incisions
Keep dressings clean and dry. Showering is usually permitted after 24–48 hours unless advised otherwise. Avoid swimming, baths, or spas until your wound has healed.Urinary Catheter Care
If you are discharged with a catheter:
- Ensure the drainage bag remains below bladder level.
- Avoid pulling or tugging on the catheter tubing.
- Maintain good hygiene around the catheter site.
- Small amounts of blood in the urine may occur initially and often improve with hydration.
What to Expect After Surgery
Depending on your procedure, you may experience:
- Mild blood in the urine
- Temporary urinary urgency or frequency
- Burning during urination
- Bruising or swelling
- Fatigue for several days
These symptoms commonly improve during the recovery period.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Please contact your surgeon or seek urgent medical care if you experience:
- Fever greater than 100.4°F (38°C)
- Heavy bleeding or large blood clots in the urine
- Severe or worsening pain
- Inability to urinate
- Persistent nausea or vomiting
- Redness, swelling, or discharge from the wound
- Chest pain or shortness of breath

Follow-up visits are important to monitor your healing and discuss results or ongoing treatment plans. Please attend all scheduled appointments and bring any relevant test results or imaging if requested.
